TO: Sonoma State Employees
FR: Military and Veteran Resource Center (MAVRC)

Dear Campus Community,

Military-affiliated students (veterans, dependents, and active duty) come to Sonoma State University hoping for a smooth transition from a military culture to a college campus culture.  These students face unique challenges that differ from those of their classmates and can impact their enrollment, retention, and academic success.  The Military and Veteran Resource Center (MAVRC) will be offering an in-person VET NET Ally Seminar on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 8:30am - 12:30pm (location: The Sonoma Valley Room).

Presented by Dr. Marshall Thomas, Director of Veteran Affairs at the Chancellor’s Office, the VET NET Ally Seminar aims to inform faculty, staff, and administrators of the challenges that this population of students face everyday and to educate on ways we can better support them in their academic and college lives.  The seminar will provide a better understanding of the military culture and reasons people join the military, discussions about the policies and procedures currently affecting veteran students, and ways to be an ally.  Participation in this seminar is optional and light refreshments will be provided.
