The quiz will consist of ten comprehensive short answer questions, five map questions on human/urban topics (using physical map like one for map quiz), and one short essay. This test is worth 25% of your grade. Here are some sample questions:

For BEST RESULTS: Read each question carefully, (ASK if you don’t understand the question); be specific (avoid broad, vague answers).

I. SHORT ANSWER. Answer the following in a few words or phrases, using a sketch or diagram where useful. Be sure to answer all parts of each question. (3 pts each)

1. (a) What were the three components of the Spanish colony in Alta California? (b) What was the intended role of each in the development of the colony?

2 .(a) What are two or three major characteristics of the North Coast, in terms of natural resources and economic activities? (b) In what ways is this region rich and in what aspects is it poor? Explain briefly.

II. MAP QUESTIONS. Use a sharp pencil to mark neatly and precisely on the map the following features. Label each line or site with the Question Number. (2 pts. each)

1. (a) Pick two of the following agricultural products and label clearly on the map one of the locations where they are produced: rice, cotton, citrus, nuts, strawberries, salad vegetables, wine grapes, milk, beef

III. SHORT ESSAY. Answer each using full sentences, and correct grammar and spelling. Be sure to answer all parts of each question thoroughly. (10 pts)

1. Discuss the differences in site and situation of each of the three or four major urban centers in California. What physical and cultural aspects encouraged development at these locations? Contrast these urban centers with areas of low population. Why do you think the relatively uninhabited parts of California have not become urban centers? Which parts of California do you think will see transition from rural to urban in the next century? Why?
