N 340 Women's Health & Illness in The Expanding Family & N345 Clinical Practicum

Welcome to N340 and N345: Women's Health Care!

"A woman's confidence and ability to give birth and care for her baby are enhanced or diminished by every person who gives her care and by the environment in which she gives birth."

Lothian, J., Goer, H.(2007). Coalition for Improving maternity services. Perinatal Education. Winter 16 (supplement 1).

Saadi is a world known Iranian 12 Century poet. This poem is on the United Nations Headquarters in New York City:

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.

If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.

If you have no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain.

Improving women's health care in a comprehensive, evidenced based manner is essential to the health of women, their partners and their families. During this semester we will explore the reproductive health of women as we assist in the health care of the women we will provide care for during the next several months.

On the left of this page, you see a navigation bar with various aspects of this course. Click on the links and information related to these areas will appear! The Communication Page is how you get to Moodle where you will be posting some information and we will have on-line interactions. I will keep adding to the information as the semester progresses and will let you know what I have added. Please let me know what you appreciate, what is confusing and what is down right frustrating.

Please take time to familiarize yourself with this course before the first class on Wednesday. I will do some general review before we start in with our discussion on birth. So please be prepared to ask questions about aspects of these courses that are not clear. Take a look at the course structure in the syllabus section because I rarely lecture.

There will be successes, challenges, disappointments, elation, fatigue and fun as this semester unfolds. What we learn this semester about health care and ourselves as nurses depends on how willing we all are to participate in these two courses. We are all experts in our own rights and these courses will benefit by how willing we are to engage in the educational experiences. I look forward to working with each of you this semester.
