The two young royals are reunited when Bluebeard shows up, claiming that Boulotte has just died and he is now free to marry the princess. But, aha! Popolani, the alchemist charged with disposing of Bluebeard's past wives, has carefully preserved all six alive - and that's only the beginning! THRILLPEDDLERS PRESENTS PARISIAN GRAND GUIGNOL: HYPNODROME HEAD TRIPS! Astounding Music! Grotesque Comedies! Amorous Appendages! Plus. A Night of Unbridled Lust and Mayhem! San Francisco's sensational Grand Guignol venue pulls out all the stops in a startling line-up of entertainments, indulgences and oddities! Hypnodrome Head Trips, an all-new Thrillpeddlers extravaganza - Every Thursday, Friday, Saturday night. To celebrate being named one of San Francisco's latest Literary Laureates, "Czar of Noir" Eddie Muller presents his adaptation of ORGY IN THE LIGHTHOUSE, a Grand Guignol classic shocking even by today's standards. When religious devotion collides head-on with rampant lust during a stormy night in a desolate lighthouse. all hell breaks loose. Russell Blackwood directs Eric Tyson Wertz, Larkin Boero, Joseph Holmes, Leah Dashe, and Yusef Lambert in this sexy, spine-tingling, and combustive one-act drama. Jean Vadim is a gay-nineties Parisian bon vivant about to be decapitated by the guillotine for a crime he did not commit. Luckily, the prison physician, Dr. Maris, has a method for sustaining Vadim's life - or the life of his head, at least. Show also features: THE JULIET DRUG and THE GLASS WOMB (the first chapters of writer/designer Jonathan Horton's original theatrical "weird science" serial), COBRA (legendary jazz composer John Zorn's most popular improvisational "game piece,”); CHICK HABIT (an homage to all souls damned to the lake of fire by the gospel tracts of Jack T. Chick); and THE EMPRESS OF COLMA (the new Queen of the Damned has a secret to keep from her South City gal pals - and it ain't pretty). Veteran Hypnodrome contributor Rob Keefe pens another hilariously grotesque comedy-thriller that can only lead one place - straight into Thrillpeddlers' signature "lights out" SPOOKSHOW finale! A note from Laurent Fourgo about his new CD: “This CD, Half & Half / Moitié-Moitié has its roots in the music of the past, but the sound is really current. This recording was a natural transition for me after performing Pop Jazz tunes at local public venues in Northern California. Being French, I naturally chose French tunes that became Jazz and Pop Standards in the US. Despite the fact I was singing them half in French, half in English, I noticed that most of the time, audiences didn’t know they were originally French! This is a way for me to pay tribute to those who created these beautiful tunes that generations have been enjoying.” Two Shows: 8:00 pm & 10:00 pm Doors open 7:30 pm Box Office: 415-291-8255 www.jazzatpearls.com or Www.laurentfourgo.com or Www.fourgo.com/calendar.html May 11, 2007. Jacques Ellul (1912-94) was one of the 20th century’s most powerful critics of the impact of technology on modern life. According to Aldous Huxley, Ellul’s book “La technique, ou, l’enjeu du siècle”(1954) (traduction anglaise, The Technological Society, 1964) « made the case » that he had tried to make in Brave New World. Ellul wrote more than fifty books, mostly in sociology and social criticism but also on religious and ethical themes. He was active in the Resistance during the German occupation, served as Professor of the History and Sociology of Institutions at the University of Bordeaux (1946-80), and was a pioneer in the environmental protection movement in southwestern France. David W. Gill discovered Ellul as he was finishing his undergraduate degree at Berkeley (1968) and eventually wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on Ellul’s ethics at the University of Southern California (1979). He currently teaches (St Mary’s College MBA program) and writes mostly in the ethics of business and technology. LE DEJEUNER DES CANOTIERS, un nouvear roman de SUSAN VREELAND. Depuis 84 ans qu'il tableau dans The Phillips Collection à Washington, "Le Déjeuner des canotiers" de Pierre-Auguste Renoir, symbolise aux yeux des Américans la France et la culture française. Of the 20-plus cookbooks Jacques Pépin has written, Chez Jacques is his most personal and engaging. Now starring in his tenth PBS series, Pépin ranks among Americas most beloved cooking teachers, and this book shows us why. The books 100 recipes for soups and appetizers, main courses, side dishes, and desserts are Pépin's own favorites among the thousands he has created over a lifetime of cooking. Using readily available ingredients and relying upon familiar techniques, these are the dishes he makes when preparing food at his Connecticut home. But Chez Jacques is more than a collection of well-liked recipes; its also a captivating sentimental journey. Each dish is introduced by a recollectionof picking dandelion greens for a spring salad, of buying fresh eggs from the local farmerthat invites readers to share in the traditions and rituals of Pépin's most intimate circle. NEW WORK : SYLVIE BLOCHER, AT THE SFMOMA. French artist Sylvie Blocher has been working on her Living Pictures video series since 1992. This ongoing project is made up of multiple site-specific video installations. Each work follows a basic format: the artist recruits volunteers through classified ads and other postings, then conducts filmed interviews with these subjects. Editing the videos into a compilation, Blocher creates a group portrait out of individual encounters. Her interviewing technique opens up possibilities for personal response and reflection and touches on issues such as immigration, privacy, memory, and the authority of the artist. This exhibition features Living Pictures/Je et Nous, a 2003 project in which Blocher filmed volunteers wearing T-shirts printed with statements they had written. In addition, it includes a new San Francisco-based installment of Living Pictures, commissioned by SFMOMA. Artist Talk : Sylvie Blocher - February 22, 6:15 p.m SFMOMA - 151 Third Street (between Mission and Howard Streets), San Francisco http://www.sfmoma.org/exhibitions/exhib_detail.asp?id=278 Supported by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy, Consulate General of France in San Francisco. SITES, a solo exhibition of new works of oil on canvas by Paris-born artist MARTINE JARDEL. Jardel’s paintings reveal the impossibility of defining monolithic identities or meanings. These new paintings continue her ongoing exploration of color and occupation of space. Color and abstraction are foremore, as she intuitively arranges color and shapes her work, and develops an immediately beautiful abstract and luminous environment. Her skilled use of color and space demonstrates purpose, defining each canvas with appreciative worth. Approximately twenty pieces, many of which have never been publicly viewed, will be on exhibition. DESIGN AND DECADENCE: FRENCH WORKS ON PAPER OF THE MODERNIST ERA, AT THE LEGION OF HONOR. The Art Deco movement of the early 20th century was unabashedly decorative, unrooted in any particular philosophy. Art Deco's elegant lines were seen as ultra-modern even as it looked to the past in the form of Egyptian, Aztec, and African influences. The movement lost ground in the 1940s, criticized for its gaudy (and by that time false) sense of luxury. This exhibition showcases prints, drawings, posters, and artist books by Fernand Léger, Cassandre, Georges Barbier, Erté, André Lhote, and others, including the renowned fabric designs produced by Bianchini Ferier. Legion of Honor - Lincoln Park - 34th Avenue & Clement Street, San Francisco. http://www.famsf.org/legion/exhibitions/exhibition.asp?exhibitionkey=671 Through June 10, 2007. MASTERPIECES OF FRENCH JEWELRY, AT THE LEGION OF HONOR. This exhibition celebrates the astonishing inspiration, refined workmanship, and variety of French jewelry from the Art Nouveau period at the beginning of the century to contemporary pieces. They begin with the sensuous Art Nouveau forms of René Lalique and Georges Fouquet, followed by the daring and exotic creations of Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels in the Art Deco era, and finishing with the ingenious and beautifully made designs of JAR in the late 20th century.
