January 5, 2013.  ANDREW CARRIERE & THE ZYDECO/CAJUN ALLSTARS perform at Ashkenaz. You can't get much more authentic than Andrew Carriere, especially when he's backed by his top-notch Zydeco/Cajun Allstars. A native of Southern Louisiana, accordionist and singer Andrew Carriere brings a long family tradition into his playing. His  father was the legendary Creole fiddler "Bebe" Carriere, his uncle was accordionist Eraste Carriere, and cousins Chubby, Calvin, and Roy Carrier are popular in the  zydeco arena. Carriere moved to the Bay Area in the '60s, learned accordion from  the late Danny Poullard, and is featured vocalist on the California Cajun Orchestra's "Not Lonesome Anymore" CD. He performs regularly with the Creole Belles and CZ &  the Bon Vivants, and more occasionally in the Cajun Classics.  Carriere's Zydeco/Cajun Allstars include steel guitarist Billy Wilson, drummer David "Killer" Hymowitz, guitarist Mitch Polzak, and bassist Steven Strauss. The lineup might not seem particularly "traditional" to current followers of Cajun and zydeco, but, Wilson explains, "This is the real tradition that came out of the '50s and  '60s honky-tonk Cajun bands, where they just had fun and played for dancers. The  steel guitar was right there, and fiddles and an occasional lead guitar." And,  of course, the accordion. The repertoire is the standards and classics of Cajun  and zydeco, old and new.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Cheryl McBride at 8:00 pm; Show  at 9:00 pm  $13/$10 students   www.ashkenaz.com

January 6, 2013.  FRENCH LITERATURE MEETUP GROUP reads LA GRAMMAIRE EST UNE CHANSON DOUCE d’ERIK ORSENNA. 3-5pm. For more information, contact : Charlie Klein, chassac@sbcglobal.net , tel. (510) 530-5078, or go to http://www.meetup.com/The-French-Literature-Meetup-Group

January 7, 2013.  DBF with JEAN-NOEL FOURMEAUX, Owner of Chateau Potelle Winery and VGS Investment Group.  Come and hear the story of Jean-Noel Fourmeaux, the French Government “wine spy” who embodies one of the most remarkable success story in California wine.  VGS Chateau Potelle Winery is located in Napa Valley and produces luxury wines mostly available via mailing list. VGS Investment Group controls real estate investments in the wine industry.  Jean-Noel created Chateau Potelle (re-named VGS Chateau Potelle) from a few hundred acres of land on Mt. Veeder and worked relentlessly to build a premium brand, often going where nobody had gone before!  With over 30 years in Napa Valley, Jean-Noel has built a solid reputation thanks to his avant-garde approach and his commitment to quality. His job as a winemaker is to respect and exploit the unique qualities of their "roots" to craft wines with a sense of style and personality.  Jean-Noel established premium Zinfandel in California while gathering numerous awards for his other wines, ranging from “Presidential” Chardonnay, to prized Cabernets and famous blends like The Illegitimate. He also happens to be passionate about life and food and has been biting into both with the same taste for adventure that has driven his successes in the wine business.  Sofitel San Francisco Bay, 223 Twin Dolphin Drive, Redwood City, CA 94065.  6.30pm-9pm  Achat par Paypal et Membres de la FACCSF $25; Achat sur Place, $30  info@lesitedbf.com or www.faccsf.com for details.

January 8, 2013.  BAD BOYS ZYDECO at Ashkenaz. An Ashkenaz regular during the David Nadel years, Evo Bluestein's rollicking band Bad Boys Zydeco returns for a hot night of dance music. Bluestein first came to attention as a young member of Fresno's old time and folk music Bluestein Family, playing a variety of instruments including autoharp. He has made instructional videos and released albums of his own music. Having learned his craft from visits to Louisiana's Cajun and zydeco masters, Bluestein with his Bad Boys Zydeco band  added his own blues, folk, rock, jazz, and original compositions to take zydeco  in new directions. Songs range from Bluestein-penned tunes such as the infectious "Step in the Right Direction" to "Bad Boys Stomp" and "Tu Me Donnes Les Blues."  With Bluestein singing and playing button accordions and fiddle, BBZ also features guitarist Joe Rosato Jr., drummer Chris Millar, bassist Kevin Hill, and scrubboard ace John Martin III.  Dirty Linen Magazine reported of Bad Boys Zydeco: "... more original than most of the current crop of zydeco groups from Louisiana and half of the songs are in French to boot ...better, more distinctive and even more in keeping with the tradition  than much of what is currently being released in the genre."  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Cheryl McBride at 8:00 pm; Show  at 8:30 pm $10  www.ashkenaz.com

HOLY MOTORS.  (Leos Carax, France; starring Denis Lavant.) One of the most bizarrely wonderful films of the year, or any year. Oscar (Lavant) spends every day riding around Paris in a white limo driven by Céline.  After making use of the car's full complement of wigs, theatrical make-up, and costumes, he emerges for "appointments" with unseen "clients," who apparently observe each vignette as it happens. And don't even try to predict what's coming next, or decipher what it all means, beyond an investigation of identity so original you won't believe your eyes. Disturbing and delightful. Movies don't get more original or memorable than this. Roxie, SF.

THE INTOUCHABLES.  Smith-Rafael, San Rafael.

LES MISERABLES, with Anne Hathaway & Hugh Jackman.  Check local theater listings for details!

MY FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL.  Once again this year, you will be able to vote for your favorite film among the 10 feature films and 10 short films selected in competition. RUST AND BONE. With Marion Cotillard, Matthias Schoenaerts, Armand Verdure and Céline Sallette.  France/Belgium, 120min, 2012.  Academy Award-winning actress Marion Cotillard gives a tour-de-force performance in Rust and Bone that rivals anything she has done before. She plays Stéphanie, a free-spirited whale trainer at a marineland on the French Riviera, who suffers a devastating injury.  Check local listings for details.

ART

January 22-February 16, 2012.  CLAIRE FONTAINE – REDEMPTIONS.  Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based collective artist, founded in 2004. After lifting her name from a popular brand of school notebooks, Claire Fontaine declared herself a "readymade artist" and began to elaborate a version of neo-conceptual art that often looks like other people's work. Working in neon, video, sculpture, painting and text, her practice can be described as an ongoing interrogation of the political impotence and the crisis of singularity that seem to define contemporary art today.  CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Kent and Vicki Logan Gallery, 360 Kansas Street, SF.

Through January 23, 2013.  DESERT JEWELS:  NORTH AFRICAN JEWELRY AND PHOTOGRAPHY FROM THE XAVIER GUERRAND-HERMES COLLECTION.  Highlights include work from Algeria and Morocco:  wedding necklaces, hair ornaments, bracelets, earrings, and fibula used to keep veils in place.  Museum of the African Diaspora, 685 Mission St., SF.  $5-$10.  Free for children under 12 when accompanied by an adult.  415.358.7200 or www.moadsf.org for details.

Through March 17, 2012.  ROYAL TREASURES FROM THE LOUVRE:  LOUIS XIV TO MARIE-ANTOINETTE.  Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco presents an unparalleled collection of decorative arts from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, including some of the most exquisite treasures of the French monarchy from the time of Louis XIV until the Revolution of 1789. Royal Treasures from the Louvre: From Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette is the story of French royal patronage, and the showcased objects in the exhibition are nothing less than dazzling:  the Gobelins manufactory’s masterwork mosaic tabletop of semiprecious stones; the gemmes de la couronne, precious hard stone vases collected by Louis XIV; the presents du Roi, diamond-and-gem snuffboxes made for the royal family to present as gifts; personal items made for Louis XV’s private use, or for use by his mistresses, Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, including exquisite Sèvres porcelain and silver; and Marie-Antoinette’s personal collection of precious vases made of agate and other hard stones.  Many of the objects in the exhibition have never been shown in the United States and indeed, several have never left France. Royal Treasures from the Louvre: From Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette Is an unparalleled collection of decorative objects from France’s most illustrious royalty, direct from the Musée du Louvre, and displayed for the first time in the United States in this exclusive presentation.  Premiere & black-tie dinner, November 14.  Opening reception for donors at the Friend level, November 15; Members-only preview hours, November 16; Opening reception, November 16.  http://legionofhonor.famsf.org/legion/exhibitions/royal-treasures-louvre-louis-xiv-marie-antoinette Reviewed in the Sunday, November 11, 2012 Datebook (pink pages) of the SF Chronicle, p.21.

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. Because they are taught by native speakers, children acquire the correct accent and language patterns. The written form of the language is introduced in both languages at this level allowing the children to learn to write and read by the end of that level.  At the Elementary level, students continue to develop their linguistic skills by adding Spanish, bringing to bear a genuine tri-language immersion program. The Renaissance School is believed to be the only Montessori school in the United States that offers a genuine three-language immersion program.  Tours of the school are available by appointment. This meeting was well attended, and we were impressed by the presenters who are leaders in the community in the fields of education and health/nutrition. Other members are leaders in the fields of communications and engineering. SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  Their goal is to offer children a solid education based on high academic standards and exposure to the global world. The dual-immersion French-American Charter School curriculum will employ a formula with a proven track record in private schools, and more recently, in charter schools on the East Coast. This opportunity will now be extended to everyone in our community via a free public charter school.  Any parent interested in having their child enrolled in a charter school focused on academic excellence with an opening to the global world is a parent  SRFACS would love to have. There are no enrollment ‘requirements’ (speaking French for example), and that is one of the great strengths of this school.  SRFACS is currently gathering signatures of parents interested in enrolling their children. You may contact this organization at: info@srfacs.org,  or sign the petition above and mail it in.  Lise Melin  Directrice de l’école @ AFSR.

February 15 & 17, 2013.  REMORQUES.  Iconic French star Jean Gabin plays a tugboat captain working the storm-battered coast of Brittany. After a harrowing rescue, he falls into a passionate affair with the enigmatic Michèle Morgan in this classic from this neglected French master Jean Grémillon (LE CIEL EST A VOUS (SFI 2012). Co-written by Jacques Prévert and boasting sumptuous production design by Alexandre Trauner, REMORQUES projects a striking vision of a world where nature suffuses human activity and lends a lingering lyricism to such ordinary events as a walk along the beach or in the country. "It remains an outstanding film and one of Grémillon's best."— Bertrand Tavernier (1941, 84 min., in French w/English subtitles)  Sonoma Film Institute.  7pm 2/15 and 4pm 2/17.  http://www.sonoma.edu/sfi/

February 22, 2013.  LUMIERE D’ETE.  Another masterpiece by Jean Grémillon. With its complex script by Jacques Prévert, LUMIERE D'ETE stands alongside CHILDREN OF PARADISE as the high point of French cinema during the German Occupation. "Suppressed by the Vichy regime for 'counterproductive' attitudes and its lightly veiled attack on Vichy values — Grémillon's influential masterwork has often been compared to THE RULES OF THE GAME. Like Renoir's masterpiece, LUMIERE D'ETE focuses on the uneasy relationship between two classes in an isolated location: a group of corrupt rich people, including an imperious lord, an opera singer, an alcoholic painter and his girlfriend, who are sequestered in a chateau on the edge of a precipice; and a group of workers who are building a dam in the valley below. At a lavish costume ball, the class tensions explode." – Toronto International Film Festival With Paul Bernard, Pierre Brasseur, and Madeleine Renaud. (1943, 112 min., in French w/English subtitles)Sonoma Film Institute.  7pm.  http://www.sonoma.edu/sfi/
