Math Professor Jean Bee Chan Recognized for Meritorious Service
SSU mathematics professor Jean Bee Chan, along with her husband Peter Stanek, recently won a Certificate of Meritorious Service from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The award is made to individuals who have made significant contributions to the MAA at the section and national level. Chan and Stanek won for the Gold (Northern California) Section.
Chan earned her B.S. and M.S. in mathematics from the University of Chicago, and her Ph.D from UCLA. Her research specialties are geometry and convexity. As a professor of mathematics at Sonoma State University since 1973, Chan has been instrumental in bringing a sense of community and mutual support to the mathematics department, which has had an immeasurably beneficial effect on the morale of students and faculty.
She enjoys teaching all mathematics courses, especially the general education introductory geometry course and the upper division course in Euclidean and Non-Euclidean geometry. Chan works hard to motivate students to reach maximum intellectual potential, and is very active in promoting scholarships for students pursuing K-12 teaching careers. The award will be presented to Chan and Stanek at the 2013 Joint Mathematics Meetings Prize Session on Thursday, Jan.10, in San Diego.
