Admission Criteria

For international admission criteria, select a student group from the following list:
First-time Freshman / Transfer Students / Post Baccalaureate or Graduate student


First-time Freshman

A student applying to a bachelor's degree program who has not completed any post-secondary course work at a college or university.

Complete the international application at http://www.csumentor.edu

Submit $55.00 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee. May be paid by credit card upon completion of the application or by check or money order made out to Sonoma State University with the applicant's name clearly indicated.

Provide financial documentation including the Documentation of Financial Support and bank certification of available funds in the appropriate amount.

Provide original or certified copies of OFFICIAL secondary records including transcripts, mark sheets, leaving certificates, graduation certificates or diplomas in the original language. Certified English translations are required of documents not originally issued in English.

Applicants who have studied in the U.S. must request transcripts be sent directly to Sonoma State.

The minimum grade point average required for freshman admission is 2.0 using the U.S. 4.0 scale and based on our evaluation of official documents. (Students who have completed high school in the U.S. will be held to the CSU subject requirements.)

English language test requirements

  • TOEFL - Test of English as a Foreign Language with a minimum paper based score of 500, or minimum internet based score of 61. Sonoma State's ETS code is 4723.
  • TOEFL is not required from freshman applicants who have studied in the U.S. full-time (excluding ESL) for three consecutive years.
  • IELTS - International English Language Test System, band score of 6.0 will be accepted in lieu of TOEFL for undergraduate admission.

Students whose English skills do not meet the minimum requirements for direct admission should consider the Sonoma State American Language Institute which offers conditional university admission. www.sonoma.edu/exed/ssali


Transfer Student

A student who has completed post-secondary course work at an accredited community college or university in the United States or at a recognized college or university outside of the U.S.

Submit $55.00 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee. May be paid by credit card upon completion of the application or a check or money order made out to Sonoma State University with the applicant's name clearly indicated.

Provide financial documentation including the Documentation of Financial Support and bank certification of available funds in the appropriate amount.

Original or certified copies of all OFFICIAL secondary and post-secondary records including transcripts, mark sheets, leaving certificates, degrees or diplomas in the original language of issue. Certified English translations are required for documents not originally issued in English.

Post Baccalaureate or Graduate student

A student who has completed a post-secondary degree equal to a U.S. bachelor's degree. Eligible to apply for a master's degree or a second bachelor's degree.

Submit $55.00 (U.S.) non-refundable application fee. May be paid by credit card upon completion of the application or a check or money order made out to Sonoma State University with the applicant's name clearly indicated.

Provide financial documentation including the Documentation of Financial Support and bank certification of available funds in the appropriate amount.

Original or certified copies of all OFFICIAL academic records including transcripts, mark sheets, leaving certificates, degrees or diplomas in the original language of issue. Certified English translations are required for documents not originally issued in English.

    Please note some graduate programs require a higher TOEFL score. Check the program website for this information.
  • TOEFL is not required from applicants who have studied in the U.S. full-time (excluding ESL) for three consecutive years. Some graduate programs require a higher TOEFL score. Please check with program to which you are applying.
  • IELTS - International English Language Test System, band score of 7.0 will be accepted.

A supplemental application and/or additional tests will be required by the graduate program to which you are applying. Be sure to check the programs's website to learn about these additional requirements.

Most graduate programs do not offer conditional admission for students whose English skills do not meet the minimum requirements for direct admission, but a few will.
