Lorena is a survivor of domestic violence and abuse. Less than a month after she married Marine John Bobbit, Gallo began to suffer both physical and psychological abuse. Neighbors noticed, the police were called numerous times but they told her she would have to get a restraining order. In June of 1993, Gallo requested a restraining order against her husband, John Bobbitt, and was told that she would have to appear before a judge the following week. Three days and two sexual assaults later she became a national headline. Gallo was arrested and charged with the felony of maliciously wounding Bobbitt. She suffered a "brief reactive psychosis" which drove her to attack the instrument that was the weapon of her accuser. Join us as we here her story and talk about the effects this violence and abuse had on her, but also about how she uses that to motivate her work as an advocate for victims and survivors today! October is Domestic Violence Month. See something , say something. You are not alone. The first 10 people who email mo.phillips@sonoma.edu will get a chance to have dinner with Lorena and hear more about her story @ 5 p.m.
