Summer Session 2024 Updates

TO: All Faculty and Staff
FR: Dr. Stacey Bosick, Associate Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and Dean of Undergraduate and Graduate Studies

Dear Colleagues,

Summer Session will be offered stateside rather than through our extension program during summer 2024. This change will retain stateside students' flexibility to take one or more courses on a condensed schedule at a "per unit" tuition rate, while allowing them to qualify for additional forms of financial assistance. Students will now register and pay for summer courses just as they do fall and spring courses, through their MySSU portal. Additional individuals including members of the public and alumni will have access to summer courses through extended education's Open University program.

Consistent with course scheduling processes for Fall and Spring semesters, Summer Session scheduling will now be handled by the chair in coordination with the dean. Faculty interested in teaching during the Summer Session should discuss their interest with their chair. Chairs and deans will collaborate to ensure appropriate course offerings, course sizes, and instructor rotations. Credit-bearing courses must be offered as approved through faculty governance and listed in Sonoma State's General Catalog (e.g., prerequisite, teaching modality). Summer Session courses will serve as additional employment opportunities with additional pay to faculty. Additional information for faculty is available on the "For Faculty" section of the Summer Intersession website.

Key upcoming dates:

  • Tuition and student fees will be finalized by January 31, 2024
  • Summer schedules are due to Julie Shell julie.shell@sonoma.edu by Monday, February 5, 2024.
  • Summer Schedule opens to students on March 6
  • Priority Registration will begin March 11. Stateside student registration will begin March 12, and Open University registration will begin March 18.

Courses associated with our Summer Bridge program and our masters in Spanish will continue to be offered by extended education Summer Session 2024. Similarly, faculty-led study abroad will be offered through extended education.
