Last week, in remembrance of the events of September 11, 2001, flags were lowered to half-staff. After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the President of the United States issued a proclamation to lower the US flag to half-staff through Sunday, September 14. Consistent with flag protocol and customary practice, the flags at SSU remained at half-staff through Sunday, September 14.
We’ve heard concerns that the campus community was not timely notified that this was going to happen. Under our existing protocol, that responsibility falls on me. I regret not providing the campus community the timely notification required by flag protocol. I have implemented procedures to ensure any future lowering of the flag to half-staff must be explicitly authorized by the University's President or Vice President for Administration & Finance and accompanied by a campus notification.
