Campuswide Power Shutdown Aug. 2 and 3

Thursday, July 17, 2025, 10:00am

TO: Campus Community
FR: J. Dana Twedell, Associate Vice President for Facilities Management

The electrical power grid for Sonoma State University will be powered down Saturday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 3 to support the switchover to the new 12kV switchgear. During this time, campus power will be off and all campus academic and administrative buildings will be closed. Employees and students will not be able to enter the majority of campus buildings during this power outage. “Closed building” signs will be posted on all exterior doors.

Residential villages will also be offline, with the exception of: Cabernet Village, Zinfandel Village, Alsace, Bordeaux, and Classico, which will be supported by diesel-fuel powered generators.

To prepare your office or campus residence (if not supported by a generator) for this scheduled power shutdown, please consider the following:

  • Equipment: Completely power down all equipment prior to 3 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 2.
  • Computers/Monitors: Remember to turn off power to computer monitors.
  • Power Supplies: Turn off uninterruptible power supplies (UPS’s) as the batteries will only carry the loads for a few hours before they are completely depleted.
  • Refrigerator/Freezer: Remove all perishable items, including ice.
  • Security: Lock doors and secure all confidential documents.
  • Trash and Recycling: Take all perishable waste items to the nearest kitchen/pantry/exterior trash bin for disposal by close of business Friday. Saturday and Sunday trash service will not take place.

Please contact Facilities Management at [email protected] or 707-664-2317 if you have any questions or concerns.
